How does Montana permanent vehicle registration work?

5 min read·Published September 14, 2026·Updated September 14, 2026
Short answer

Montana permanent registration lets an eligible vehicle be registered once with no annual renewal. Light vehicles and motorhomes qualify at 11 model years and older, for a one-time $87.50 or $237.50, and most trailers qualify at any age. The plates stay valid as long as the same owner keeps the vehicle, which an LLC owner rarely changes.

Montana permanent vehicle registration replaces the yearly trip to the county treasurer with a single one-time fee. It is written into MCA 61-3-321 and administered by the county treasurers and the Motor Vehicle Division, and it is one of the two reasons out-of-state owners register through a Montana LLC; the other is that Montana charges no sales tax. Here is which vehicles qualify, what it costs, and how it behaves when the vehicle is owned by an LLC.

Which vehicles qualify for permanent registration in Montana?

Light vehicles (cars, SUVs, and pickups) and motor homes qualify once they are 11 model years or older, per the Motor Vehicle Division. Trailers, including travel trailers and fifth wheels, are registered permanently on a one-time fee based on weight regardless of age. Motorcycles and boats have their own schedules with permanent options for older units; we confirm eligibility for those before filing.

What does permanent registration cost?

For a light vehicle 11 years and older, the one-time fee is $87.50 instead of $28 a year; it pays for itself in a little over three years. For a motor home the one-time fee is $237.50 instead of $97.50 a year, so about two and a half years. County option tax, where the county levies it, is still assessed on the vehicle's depreciated value each year under MCA 61-3-537, and Montana's $825 and $800 luxury fees stop at 11 model years, which is the same age at which permanent registration begins. The cost guide puts these fees alongside ours.

Does permanent registration survive a sale or a title change?

No. Permanent registration attaches to the owner and the vehicle together; when the vehicle is sold, the new owner registers it again and pays the fee again. This is where LLC ownership matters. The LLC is the owner of record, so a change in who holds the LLC's membership interest does not change the titled owner, and the permanent registration stays in place. Sell the vehicle out of the LLC and the buyer starts over.

How does permanent registration work with a Montana LLC?

The LLC holds the title, the registered agent provides the Montana address, and the county issues permanent plates to the LLC. The only recurring obligations are the LLC's annual report by April 15, which our $149 renewal files, and county option tax where it applies. There is no renewal notice for the plates because there is nothing to renew.

Is there a permanent option for newer vehicles?

No. A light vehicle under 11 model years pays $217 a year for its first four years and $87 a year from years five to ten; a motor home pays from $282.50 down to $97.50 by age. Vehicles with an MSRP over $150,000 (cars) or $300,000 (motor homes) that are 10 years or newer also pay the annual luxury fee. At 11 years the yearly fee drops and the permanent option opens. The RV cost guide has the full motorhome schedule.

What about insurance and inspections?

Montana has no periodic safety or emissions inspection for registered vehicles, so a permanently registered vehicle never returns to the county. Insurance is still required and is written with the LLC as the named insured at the vehicle's actual garaging address. Keep the registration receipt in the vehicle; there is no yearly sticker to replace.

Permanent registration is the reason many full-time RVers and collectors choose Montana: register once, keep the plates for as long as you own the vehicle, and pay no sales tax on the purchase.

Montana Plate Co. is a formation and registered-agent service, not a law firm or tax advisor. Permanent plates do not change where a vehicle is used, so a vehicle kept at your home may still face home-state use tax; ask a tax professional. The step-by-step RV guide shows the filing, pricing lists our fees, and the quote builder tells you before you pay whether your vehicle qualifies.

Related questions

Does Montana permanent registration ever expire?

No. Once a light vehicle or motor home 11 model years and older is registered permanently, the registration stays valid for as long as the same owner keeps the vehicle. It ends only when the vehicle is sold or otherwise changes titled owner, at which point the new owner registers it again.

Can I get permanent registration on a new car?

No. Light vehicles and motor homes must be 11 model years or older to qualify. A newer vehicle pays Montana's age-based annual fee, $217 a year for a car 0 to 4 years old and $87 from 5 to 10 years, until it reaches 11 years. Trailers are the exception and can be registered permanently at any age.

Do I still owe the annual report with permanent plates?

Yes. Permanent registration covers the vehicle; the annual report covers the LLC that owns it. The report is due to the Montana Secretary of State by April 15 each year, and our $149 Registered Agent Renewal files it. Miss it and the LLC can be dissolved, which puts the registration at risk.

Does permanent registration transfer to a buyer?

No. It attaches to the owner and vehicle together, so a buyer must register the vehicle again and pay the fee again. When an LLC owns the vehicle, changing who owns the LLC does not change the titled owner, so the permanent registration stays in place until the vehicle itself leaves the LLC.
