Form a Montana LLC, title the RV to it, and register with a county treasurer. RVs and motorhomes 11 model years and older qualify for permanent registration, so there is no annual renewal. The full process runs 3 to 7 business days.
RVs are the most common vehicle we register, because full-time travelers often have no single home state and because Montana offers permanent registration. Here is the sequence from purchase to plates.
Step 1: Form the Montana LLC
The LLC becomes the legal owner of the RV. We file it with the Montana Secretary of State, usually approved in one business day, and serve as the registered agent at our Helena office. You do not need to be in Montana.
Step 2: Title the RV to the LLC
We transfer title from the seller or your name into the LLC. For a financed RV, the lender must agree to title it to the LLC and be listed as lienholder; our Concierge tier handles that coordination.
Step 3: Register and choose permanent plates
At the county treasurer, the RV is registered to the LLC. Motorhomes 11 model years and older are eligible for permanent registration, which has no renewal date. Newer coaches register on a standard cycle until they reach the threshold.
Permanent registration is why many full-time RVers pick Montana: register once, no annual renewal, and no state sales tax on the purchase.
What you receive
- Montana title in the LLC's name.
- Montana plates and registration for the RV.
- LLC formation documents and registered-agent details.
- A renewal reminder for the annual report due April 15.
Total turnaround is 3 to 7 business days from complete paperwork. Keep the registration in the coach, and remember the LLC needs its Montana annual report each year to stay in good standing.
