How it works

Four steps, 3–7 business days

From the day we have your paperwork, the Montana LLC files in about one business day and plates follow.

  1. 1

    Tell us about the vehicle

Send the year, make, model, VIN, and current title or purchase documents. Financed and leased vehicles are fine — we explain the lienholder paperwork below.

  2. 2

    We file your Montana LLC

We form a Montana LLC in your name and serve as your registered agent at our Bozeman office. Filing is submitted to the Montana Secretary of State, typically approved in one business day.

  3. 3

We title and register the vehicle

The LLC becomes the registered owner. We handle the county treasurer titling, permanent registration where eligible, and the pass-through of state fees.

  4. 4

Plates and documents ship to you

Montana plates, registration, and your LLC records are couriered to your address. Total turnaround runs 3–7 business days from complete paperwork.

All FAQs
Is registering a vehicle through a Montana LLC legal?

Yes. Forming a Montana LLC and titling a vehicle to it is lawful tax planning, not evasion — a distinction Louisiana's Supreme Court drew in Thomas v. Bridges (2014) when it declined to treat such an arrangement as fraud. That was one state's ruling, and the court noted the issue is ultimately for legislatures. Whether your home state assesses use tax depends on its own law and on where the vehicle is kept and used, so confirm with a tax professional.

Why is there no sales tax in Montana?

Montana is one of five states with no general sales tax, alongside Oregon, New Hampshire, Delaware, and Alaska. Because the LLC that buys and registers the vehicle is a Montana entity, the purchase is not subject to Montana sales tax. Other fees, like registration, still apply and pass through at cost.

Do I need a Montana address to do this?

No. You do not need to live in Montana or hold a Montana address. Your LLC uses our Bozeman office as its registered agent address, which satisfies the state requirement. You keep your home-state driver's license and mailing address; the vehicle is titled to the Montana entity.

How long does the whole process take?

Plan on 3 to 7 business days from the point we have complete paperwork. The Montana LLC is typically approved by the Secretary of State in one business day. Titling and registration at the county follow, then plates and documents are couriered to your address.

What does it cost, all in?

Our service fee is a flat $649 for Standard Registration. On top of that, Montana state filing fees and county registration fees pass through at cost and appear on your invoice. There is no sales tax on the purchase and no hidden add-on or processing markup.

Can I register a financed or leased vehicle?

Yes, with lienholder cooperation. The lender or lessor must agree to title the vehicle to your Montana LLC and be listed as lienholder. Our Concierge tier coordinates this paperwork. Some lenders decline; we tell you before you pay if yours is likely to.
