Do I need a Montana address to register a vehicle there?

Short answer

No. You do not need a Montana address, residency, or driver's license. Your LLC uses a Montana registered agent's address, which satisfies the state requirement. You keep your home-state license and mailing address.

This is the most common question we get, and the answer is short: you do not need a Montana address of your own. Montana requires the LLC to have a registered agent with a physical in-state address. That agent is us.

What the registered agent address covers

  • It is the LLC's official address with the Secretary of State.
  • It receives state notices and legal service on the LLC's behalf.
  • It satisfies the in-state physical address requirement.
  • It appears on the LLC's public record, not your home address.

What stays with you

Your personal life does not move to Montana. You keep your home-state driver's license, your home mailing address, and your residency. The Montana connection belongs to the LLC and the vehicle it owns, not to you personally.

You never have to visit Montana. Formation, titling, and registration are handled remotely; plates and documents are couriered to your address.

Because you are not establishing personal residency, this does not change your home-state income tax, voting, or license. It also means your home state can still consider where the vehicle is actually used when it looks at use tax.
